So I thought it might be fun to give you an idea of what a portrait session with Jessie Rose Photography is like!

You might be interested in a portrait session because you have a new addition to the family and would love a large framed photograph of your growing family above the fireplace in the living room. You might be newly engaged to the person of your dreams and want to preserve this special time in a gorgeous coffee table book or perhaps in the pages of your guest book on your special day. Maybe you want to have a fleeting moment in your life captured and preserved in a beautiful artistic way!

When you book your session I like to learn about you and your family, the sorts of things you love to do together and how you intend to display your photographs. This helps us decide on the perfect location as well as the types of images we are after. For example you might be after some framed prints for Charlie’s blue and yellow nursery, as Charlie is fascinated by the sand, waves and seagulls at the beach. We could then create a beautiful set of images of you and your family splashing your ankles in the ocean, building sand castles, collecting shells, laughing and playing together on the sand with the beautiful backdrop of the sea and the chorusing of seagulls.

The day of your portrait session with Jessie Rose Photography is here!  I love to incorporate the magical natural light of golden hour in to your session – which means your session is often around sunrise or sunset, this makes for beautiful lighting:).

For families with young children it’s a good idea to ensure the little ones are fed and well rested before we start so they are full of energy! Bring along some snacks and drinks just in case. You may also like to bring a few favourite toys; keep in mind these may find their way into the photographs so chose toys you’d be happy to see.

What to wear?
Textures and colours look great, as do crisp whites and creams on their own or with denim. Accessories are fantastic too, you may like to bring some hats, beanies or scarves. Patterns can look great, but large logos and images distract from a subjects face so I suggest leaving these at home. Think of the location of your session, you may be after a casual beach shoot or a more formal approach. For a family or group session, wearing similar tones is a good idea.

For a maternity session you might choose to be nude, semi-nude or clothed. If clothed, show that baby bump! Fitted tops or a cardi/shirt/jacket which is left open over the bump works well. Jeans are also great, with the top few buttons left undone. This is such a magical time for a mother and I love capturing these moments.

Let the fun begin! During your session the aim is to have fun and be yourself! The best photos generally capture those moments you least expect, which are full of excitement, surprise and love! Some of my favourite images from portrait sessions have followed the discovery of a lady beetle, a precious shell and even a lovely autumn leaf. Your portrait session generally lasts for 1 – 1½ hours.

I love animals! Bringing your family pet along to a session is always great fun!

After your session is over we say our farewells and head home. The editing process begins and within 3 weeks your photographs are ready for viewing and you are able to order your prints and/or albums!

Note for Newborn sessions
Newborns are best photographed within their first 10 days as your little one is generally calmer in this period and the wonder and magic of this time passes so quickly. Most people pencil these sessions early on in their pregnancy as session times fill up.
